Reckoning the 3rd Dimension

October 24, 2009 – 10:29 am

Not every day do people care to stop by and take notice. Not every day do passive onlookers stare in sheer amazement. When I stepped in at the Forum mall Bangalore, on the 20th of September, I too was taken aback at the mini spectacle. There were 5 large LCD screens, airing something that India hadn’t quite woken up to… 3D interactives! International video events giant Balfour, had come up with a cutting edge technology to host a set of the world’s first 3D commercials. There were these series of 15 sec adverts that run havoc by creating the most pulverizing perception of moving deep within and jumping right out of the LCD screens. While viewing these adverts, the mind of the viewer easily forms an opinion that the pictures are constantly moving in and coming out of the screens with completely liberty. After a point, one almost tends to tempted enough to actually reach out and try touching the fluid images!

I had to wait for almost ten minutes to witness the Bharatonline 3D commercial, and my wait was totally worth the time. Working synchronously with our team of graphic designers on CAD models, I thought we had done a very neat job. While I was at it, I got a call from my Delhi counterpart and boy, did he like it! He had just seen the advert playing at the Select Citi Mall, Delhi and he proudly narrated the sites of people crowding around the screens and enjoying the visual marvel.

In order for people to check out what’s the buzz all about, I have provided a direct video streaming with dual screen modes. The one on the left is the 2D representation and the one of the right is the 3D map. On the map, the darker shades represent the depth within the screen and the lighter ones show the amount of popping out effect for the corresponding image. Simply put in, darker the shade, deeper the image; similarly lighter the shade the more protrusive is its effect. The advert is playing live from the 20th of September, to the 31 of October 09, at the aforesaid locations. So alternatively, you could run to these locations and watch it for yourself!
